PRIMARY

List primary aged children below:

Primary Teachers: Melissa Gilliam, Carey Kamber

The Primary class is specially designed for our 3 and 4 year old students.  For these young children, our goal is to provide enrichment activities that the children will learn from and have fun doing.  We use a thematic based approach to teaching.  We will learn about many things this year including, insects, plants, animals, space and community helpers.  The focus in our class is not on reading, writing and math skills, although those skills may be incorporated in activities in the classroom.  Our class has a wide age range and ability level and we find that parents are better suited to teach the academics.  The morning will begin with circle time and then snack time, followed by an hour of rotating small groups.  During small group time, your child will do a variety of activities related to our theme.  The rest of our morning will consist of time on the playground, story time and Spanish.  After lunch the children will have music and movement, free play centers, story time and more playground time.  This is a fun, hands-on learning class for 3 and 4 year olds.  Class Fee $35

* Planned Schedule: Science (Malissa Davis), Literature and Creative Writing, Life Skills Exploration (Rebecca Conley), Lunch/Recess, Art Adventures (Wendy Davenport), P.E. (Rebecca Conley)

Class Descriptions below-- details for some classes will be available soon...
1st Period: Apologia Science Course: I am going to be teaching an Apologia science class for 3rd - 5th grade.  I haven't decided which class, but I have narrowed it down to Exploring Creation with Botany, 2nd Edition; Exploring Creation with Earth Science; or Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics.  I would like parent feedback as to which class you'd prefer and I will teach the class that is most chosen.  You will need to purchase the textbook and notebooking journal for the class, and you get to decide if the regular notebooking journal or the junior notebooking journal is right for your student as both can be used in the class.  There will be a class fee of $15 and I may assign your student to bring supplies for a specific class. Class descriptions for each class can be found on Apologia's website.  Please email or text me which class you prefer (I am leaning toward Botany) or if you have any questions. Thanks! --Malissa Davis

3rd Period Life Skills Class: The life skills class will provide basic education on skills that will be practical for both men and women and that will be essential regardless of career choice. Topics like first aid, money management, menu planning, cooking, table setting, cleaning and making some natural cleaning products, and gardening. The class is also going to cater to some of the specific interests the kids have, possibly including guest speakers from professionals in fields the kids are interested in. We hope to make it a hands on class and teach some practical things while making everyday tasks a little more fun. No supplies are needed. The kids will receive some “tools” to take home with certain lessons, so there will be a $20 supply fee. -- Rebecca

4th Period: Art Adventures-This class will be mixed with Literature and Art. We will journey through richly illustrated storybooks, learn about various artists and their techniques, as well as play games to retain what the students have learned during the semester. Lastly, we’ll get hands-on creating art masterpieces!  Your child will need to bring an old, oversized t-shirt the first day of class. This will be their smock for the school year. I will store them in the closet and wash them when necessary. $15 course fee for the year. Please have your child bring their imagination and participation! -- Wendy

5th Period PE: This will be an informal, unprofessional physical education class. Our focus will be on being active regardless of how coordinated you are and will include a mini health session on nutrition and why we need exercise. The kids will not come out in shape for boot camp but will hopefully enjoy a full class of exercise disguised as fun each week. In celebration of the coming olympics, we’re going to start the semester with summer olympics (which will be nothing like the real olympics), and we’ll end the semester with Winter Olympics.  No supplies necessary. $5 class fee for some fun “equipment” we’ll use.  -- Rebecca

Class Descriptions below-- details for some classes will be available soon..

1st Period Connecting Cultures: Connecting Cultures will be an engaging study of world geography and God’s people as we study a variety of cultures. This will be a team experience teaching and learning alongside of each other. Weekly, each student will do some type of individual study of a particular place and share “findings” with the class through different required modalities.  Each student will learn where the majority of the countries in the world are located, identify many of them through icons and major historical events, and connect various disciplines (science, math, history, religions) to different countries. We hope to have speakers come in who have lived or served in other cultures share with us. Each week there will be an evaluation of our comprehensive collection of learning (weekly quizzes on locations and icons and facts that will build on from week to week); this type of evaluation will  help us all remember our learning more solidly and easily.Essentially, our fundamental purpose is to know more about God, the places He made, and to understand and love His people more deeply.I will do most of my communication of homework through email because much of what we do depends on what transpires in class that particular week. I need you to commit about an hour of work a week outside of class. Spending that time will make all the difference to your learning, to the others in the class, and the overall experience.Students, you will just need a medium-sized 3-ring binder to keep track of maps and papers. Some blank notebook paper for notes would be helpful. There will be a $7 fee for the class for various colored copies, maps, foods, etc. This likely will cover both semesters; I will reassess at the end of this semester. --Nancy Church 706.935.8963

2nd Period IEW: IEW is a writing program that will improve your student's ability to write colorful, descriptive, strong, persuasive, clear, and enjoyable to read essays.  IEW takes the brainstorming out of the writing process.  It allows the student to focus on a GIVEN content/paragraph and write a paragraph about that content using the IEW checklist of writing tools.  Students will start by learning a few “dress-ups” (an IEW term for grammatical tools) and then build on this each week by adding more “dress-ups”.  By the end of 16 weeks, your student will be editing their paragraphs with a checklist of 10+ “dress-up” items and writing 5 paragraph essays with clarity and colorful/descriptive words/phrases.  Writing this way, allows the reader to have a vivid picture in their mind of what they have read.  The IEW program is used in many homeschool co-ops including Classical Conversations and is an ideal way for a students to imrove their writing. IEW will teach them how to choose quality verbs and adjectives and introduce a number of stylistic techniques which will improve their writing dramatically.

IEW is a lot of fun!  Students will be writing a paragraph or essay each week.  They will be reading some of their written paragraphs/essays out loud to the class weekly.  Homework will be to take the given content paragraph and move it through all the writing stages they will learn in class, at home with their parent.  There will be email communication weekly so the parent knows how to help their student.  With IEW, the parent is in charge of editing their paragraphs for spelling errors.  IEW takes the brainstorming and spelling challenges out of the writing process so the focus can be solely on writing well.  Of course each parent will be the final judge as to what support their student needs at home to be successful in writing their essays.

The DGP  program ( Daily Grammar Program) will be used for grammar instruction in this class as well. Homework will entail, writing a paragraph or essay each week or two and taking it through the process of rough draft, editing and final draft.  As well as, completing the DGP grammar work daily (approx 5-8min) Students should expect 30-45 minutes per day of homework.  Class fees will include a $25 IEW workbook (xeroxed and created/compiled by the teacher) and $10 for the DGP grammar workbook.  -- Amy Hina    NOTE:Amy will provide books needed, this will be covered by class fee.

3rd Period Animal science and agriculture is going to take a look at our local resources. Each month we will have a different focus and have opportunity for presentations, reports, guest speakers, and hands on fun. We can make this class as intensive or elective based on your needs.--Crystal

4th Period LIfe Skills Class: This class will consist of specialized training or demonstrations on a weekly basis or over a period of several weeks sometimes with co-op members sharing their skills and expertise or special guests visiting co-op.

4th & 5th Period Pinterested Class (Exploring arts and crafts inspired by Pinterest): Craft: an activity involving skill in making things by hand.  So often, we Pin away but are often inhibited by lack of time or the proper tools to create the things that inspire us. In this class, we will remove those barriers and learn about the tools and skills necessary to craft ordinary and even discarded objects into something beautiful. We will also look into the lives and businesses of a few people that have used their arts and crafts skills to build successful businesses. On completion of this class, students will be able to Pin, gather, and confidently create a variety of handmade items, each inspired by the beloved search engine, Pinterest. Supplies needed: hot glue gun, markers, pencils, very small bottle of mod podge, and a small bottle of chalk paint in a favorite color. Please note: do not be alarmed if homework includes occasionally rummaging through your household garbage to rescue discarded cereal boxes or old books. Class Fee $5  --Jodi Garrett
